Review of Dope (2015) by Samuel H — 30 Sep 2015
Dope does not fit easily into the mold of race movies. Just like Malcolm exhibits qualities that both white and black people have, so Dope is a film that is very approachable for a white man and yet is directed and produced entirely by African Americans. In fact I would argue that that is the point of the film itself, and in many ways is a reflection of the director; that in order to get rid of race we need to stop stereotyping and asking why a white man would want to do something an African American would do and vice versa. The most powerful line in the movie is one of the concluding ones. Malcolm writes "So you ask why I want to go to Harvard. If I was white would you even ask that question?".
Dope is rich with goodies. The music is quite frankly dope. The lead actor is very good and the plot line is excellent. Truly an original piece. Dope is worth a watch.
