Review of Dope (2015) by Lee P — 24 Jun 2015
DOPE is a coming of age story for some bright and awkward kids in LA on their way to an uncertain future. Although the premise of the film is old, the characters are funny and bring a fresh perspective.
The plot itself is a bit too convenient, and the end was too preachy (SERIOUSLY, there are other great schools in America that aren't named HARVARD or YALE!) The difficulties of their life are shown in vibrant detail.
I would have been more interested to the core group interacting in different situations, but overall the performances were nuanced enough to carry the film to a place outside of the realm of corny and overwrought.
