Review of Doomsday (1938) by Scott W — 16 Nov 2010
I liked this movie a lot more on the second viewing, for some reason I thought it played better on DVD at home. The unrated version has lots of nice extra gore shots thrown in, and the action sequences flow a bit better.
It's much better than I initially gave it credit for, it's another kick-ass piece of genre cinema from Neil Marshall. And really, after making a horror film as good and original as 'The Descent', he deserves to let the genre movie fanboy in him run wild on this one, as this movie is essentially a celebration of cult classics like 'The Road Warrior', 'Escape From New York', 'Aliens', and the biohazards of any zombie movie (though there are no actual zombies to be found here).
I still think Rhona Mitra is no Snake Plisskin in terms of charisma, but she's still a fine lady! Keep a lookout for one of the better car chases you're likely to see in a movie this year, with Frankie Goes to Hollywood blasting over the soundtrack.
That scene is a handful of aces.
