Review of Donnie Darko (2001) by Joe C — 12 Mar 2013
A fascinating, yet ultimately unfulfilling cult film. The style director Richard Kelly employs is dark and disorienting at times, as it should be for a film shrouded in such surreal mystery. The film eventually loses momentum in the ending which, while it makes for interesting conversations afterwards, is a look at self sacrifice that destroys itself through circular reasoning.
Engaging at times, the film ends up being nothing more than a movie more interested in putting together the pieces of a puzzle while looking smart and sophisticated rather than actually asking any important questions.
