Review of Donkey Skin (1908) by Matthew M — 31 Dec 2007
A leading cast to die for: Deneauve, Jean Marais and Delphine Seyrig, who realises that a campy performance is a guaranteed scene-stealer! The film is a variant on the Cinderella story (by the same author), and seemingly set within a Medieval France: however wily Demy pulls the rug from under our feet within the final scene! Some charming songs to match Disney's Sherman brothers of the same period, yet the racy narrative touches on incest - something Uncle Walt would never dream of, reminding us that all fairy tales contain a dark core.
Demy however, coats his musical confection with fairy dust and a light humour, incorporating a delicious-sounding recipe song, to match Snow White's "Whistle While You Work". Far too good for the children!
