Review of Don Quixote (1992) by Bryan L — 19 Jan 2009
A true disappoinment. The image quality is poor, which is disappointing when you consider the artistry seen in the rest of Welles' films. The sound is worse than the picture, as the voices of the characters switches haphazardly between the dubbing done by Welles himself and the voice actors who finished off the project. It is not simply that the voices are dissimilar (and they are) but that the characterization of Welles does not match the characterization provided by the later voice actors.
Beyond the poor technical quality of the film, the narrative itself does not flow well. Pieced together years after the end of photography (and the death of Welles), the people responsible for putting this film together (and I'm using that term very loosely here) seem to have put in everything they could get their hands on, which results in a film that feels occasionally like it is wandering in the desert.
