Review of Domino (1982) by Rhanda D — 25 Feb 2009
If you've ever wondered what it would be like to eat nothing but cotton candy for a week solid, you'll probably be happy with "Domino." A film that's so massively style over substance should be preposterous, and, honestly "Domino" gets close to that edge.
But Tony Scott's meticulous control of the film -- every bit of it is manipulated, from the soundtrack to the editing, the color saturation, everything -- works. The ambiguous, far-from-straightforward screenplay from Richard Kelly (yes, THAT Richard Kelly.
The "Donnie Darko" one. I know, I was surprised too) seems to get at the essence of who Domino Harvey really was -- in that noone really knew. The movie's been criticized for its stylistic approach and for the wide berth it gives reality, but it's all good campy fun when you get right down to it, and what more can you ask from a movie about a female model turned bounty hunter?
