Review of Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist (2005) by Jonathan P — 30 Nov 2008
If you've come looking for high-paced gore keep walking. The complete anthithesis to the "torture porn" trend displayed in movies such as Hostel, Dominion was completed and shelved, deemed by studio executives as uncommercial. When this movie should have been garnering awards it instead collected dust, thankfully we now have a compromise and it has been released on DVD.
Gorgeously shot and based in 1940's Africa, the film deals with big ideas. An arty intelligent horror film, quietly creeping in themes of religion, faith, guilt, the nature of evil and redemption, as well as commentary on xenophobia, colonialism and war.
Not that it is without scares, it's just that the slow burn of the movie and the subdued and psychological dread unnerve more than any pea soup spew ever could.
