Review of Dogtown and Z-Boys (2002) by Rich B — 28 Nov 2005
Dogtown and Z Boys (2002) ? ?If you looked at the story of Peter Pan and the Lost Boys, Pan took the children and they defeated Captain Hook, but in my world, and the world of the Zephyr Shop, I [was] Captain Hook, we ? defeated Pan, and turned the Lost Boys into Pirates.? ? Skip Engblom (Zephyr Shop Co-Founder).
?Dogtown? is Stacy Peralta?s autobiographical documentary of the rise and dissolution of the ?Z? Boys (Jeff Ho / Zephyr Competition Team), a skater group that emerged from the ?dead wonder land? known as P.O.P.P (?Pacific Ocean Park Pier? in Venice Beach, California) in the early 1970s and created the rebel image that transformed skateboarding into a world phenomenon. Thirty years later, the influence of the Z Boys is nearly everywhere you look.
Sean Penn narrates this cultural revolution, which is revealed through interviews of the Z Boy skaters themselves and illustrated through the amazing still/video library of Craig Stecyk. The Lords of Dogtown is just a couple of DVDs back in the Netflix queue. I'm really looking forward to seeing that!
