Review of Dog Soldiers (2002) by Johnny T — 18 Jul 2011
To call this one an eventual cult classic would be an understatement, and woe is the horror fan who opts to overlook this goofily endearing and well-lensed gorefest. There is a welcome lack of pretension about the film, which very simply sets out to entertain and ends up delivering in good measure. One of those 'exception to the rule' horror movies in which a little humour and a lot of effort go a very long way. What Dog Soldiers lacks in originality it makes up for in an awareness of such unoriginality, one that allows the characters to cleverly reference other movies, banter sarcastically while being threatened by a 300 pound wolfman, and deliver a handful of masterfully kinetic action scenes - all without worrying about re-inventing the wheel.
VERDICT: "Matinée" - (Mixed reaction). These kinds of movies are usually movies that had some good things, but some bad things kept it from being amazing. This rating says to pay matinée prices to see at a theatre, buy an ex-rental or a cheap price of the DVD to own.
