Review of Dog Day Afternoon (1975) by Gina B — 13 Nov 2010
A hostage situation told at its best.
Hostage situations are no laughing matter - they are scary, nerve wrecking, and psychologically damaging. And this is what makes Dog Day Afternoon so great, because while it still contains these small elements of a true hostage situation, it also shows the comical and reality side of two lesser known men that are trying to rob a bank, they are amatures, and this is what you see at its best.
It's refreshing to see a hostage themed movie with some comedy to it, and not the usual psychological type hostage movies, which are fine and fun, but still it is good to see something that stands out from the usual genre, but also still keeps a serious theme.
The actors are great, the story is based on a true hostage story, and it is told brilliantly.
