Review of Doctor Zhivago (1965) by James B — 09 Jun 2009
Lean! Omar Sharif! How epic. Julie Christie looks quite attractive as the Lara (of the Theme). Great vistas, but Pasternak's spineless hero still manages to annoy after so many years. If only he had made a stand at the end when it mattered, none of the story's late tragedies need have happened.
It is an epic romance after all, and in such the mistakes are also epic. Or else why would we shed a tear? Alec Guinness is hopelessly miscast. If only Lean had tried a few new actors.
