Review of Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing (2006) by Elizabeth N — 07 Mar 2008
This one I watched on cable and decided to watch it based on the reviews. I thought it was both entertaining and moving. I never really knew their music, but I was impressed with their talent for songwriting and musicianship.
The Dixie Chicks are definitely ones to speak their minds, although they don't have much to say politically. But what I liked about them is that they just didn't care what people thought about them.
And, they were funny, too. This documentary was not focused on the comments that led to their banning from country music stations as much as the fact that they were even banned/boycotted for a sort of half-joke.
Ultimately, though, I thought that what "Shut up and sing" was really about was the Dixie Chicks as songwriters as well as strong-willed, family-oriented women, who just happen to be caught in the middle of controversy.
