Review of Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing (2006) by Philip S — 07 Sep 2010
I'd only heard of the Dixie Chicks on a very small scale before seeing this movie. I have to say they came across very well. I even liked their music quite a bit. (I'm not usually a country music fan).
The film itself is a hugely enjoyable, it provides an insight into the band itself as well as the small-mindedness of (at least a part of) America. The common theme in American Documentaries of this sort, "free speech", appears and once again it evidently doesn't exist in America despite a strong assertion to the contrary.
One thing that struck me through this film is how (other than the anti-bush comment) pro-America this band seems. They have strong family values; stick together and genuinely seem like decent people. For them to have been destroyed (or at least severely wounded) by one fleeting comment is a strange thing.
A very enjoyable movie and they've won one new fan in the process.
