Review of Disgrace (2008) by Emma J — 28 Nov 2009
Malkovich is perfectly attuned to Lurie's haughty froideur: it's hard to think of anyone else who could quite express such disdain at his screen daughter's choice of reading, or be so convincing in professing a desire to kick a cat around when faced with the special pleading of animal rights supporters.
.. It doesn't attempt to disentangle Coetzee's racial politics - has South Africa gone to the dogs, is it just moving on, or has it still a long way to go? - preferring to play the book as it lies.
Still, it's a perceptive adaptation, one that spots the reluctance in the eyes of Lurie's conquests, and how the initial chill in Coetzee's prose turns almost imperceptibly into an acknowledgement of something warmer and more forgiving.
