Review of Disco Pigs (2001) by Megan M — 10 Jan 2008

I usually take about a few hours to let a movie soak in before making a review but I think I'm going to have to get this one off my chest! The movie star Elaine Cassidy (runt) and Cillian Murphy (pig) who from birth, are inseparable. They grow up in their own world, it's just the two of them. Pig, a free spirited boy has nothing in his life except for the only person he truly loves, runt. The two are mischievous kids, always getting into trouble. Runt is more behaving and when things get out of hand with the two joke-sters shes the one to roar it to a halt. When Runt is taken away to a far away Irish city, pig goes crazy. He acts out in ways he never has. He throws away his home and goes searching for her, when he finally finds her he sees that she has gotten another life, made a new friend, and is starting over. He has nothing left. They are the King and the Queen. On their birthday, they run away together to the place they have been searching for all their 17 years, the Palace. When others get into the way of Pig and Runt's dying relationship, Pig thrashes out and cannot take losing her. He ends up killing Runt's friend, which of course upsets her beyond words. The movie ends when Runt discovers the color of love... and leaves behind the person she's loved all her life.
I am truely amazed by this movie's plot. It was quite strange in the way it was filmed and I had a bit of a hard time following the Irish accents, me being not irish and all. The bad ending in this movie makes the whole thing just 'click' dare I say. You don't expect it. You don't see it coming. The entire movie is complete shock and surprise and the story just twists and turns. I was brought to complete tears in the tragic scenes and I doubt you will be able to hold it in. I normally do not cry in movies, even if they are true. Pig's is one of the most complex characters and when he wants a stop to his haywire behavior he asks Runt to end his life! I just cried and cried! I have never in my life been so moved by any movie I have ever seen. Even though this movie may not seem by a real winner by my words, I do recommend it for anyone in a relationship or who likes dramas. I will never think of the color blue the same again. It's something that's original and new. Probably the best drama I have seen. The best independent I have ever seen. 2 thumbs up for Cillian Murphy's performance.
