Review of Dig (2012) by Kevin G — 29 Mar 2011
It's an incredibly fascinating story of a friendship and subsequent conflict between two really great bands. You couldn't write some of these characters, they're so unique and raw. I specifically speak of Anton Newcombe, who is clearly both an extremely innovative mastermind of music, while simultaneously a complete train wreck of a human being.
I was already a fan of The Dandy Warhols, but this has in many ways made me more interested to hear some more of Brian Jonestown Massacre. The idea that all of this crazy rivalry and dysfunctional events were happening in the background of the creations of some of my favorite songs makes the film even more resonant with me.
In many ways this is a documentary that just truly got lucky, there's so much brutally honest behavior being captured here, it's like a blast of unrestrained sincerity. It makes me even more interested to study some of the other band conflicts of the time like the famous Blur/Oasis one, which I can frankly only wish had been captured as meticulously as the conflict in this was.
