Review of The Post (2017) by Kevin G — 17 Jan 2018
I sometimes felt the sentimentality of the movie was over-emphasized and wondered about the depiction of Kay Graham as a kind of bumbling/dottering woman uncertain of her position. My impression had been previously that she could be an intimidating boss. She and Ben Bradley seemed like they were on even ground during the movie, again not exactly my impression of their relationship (although I might just be ignorant of the facts). This could be to lend greater significance to the position she's in and the decisions she ultimately makes, but I think it's a less interesting story and one that's been told many times.
Also, I would argue that Graham doesn't grow in the movie as much as she makes a complete character change arbitrarily so that, I assume, the movie could end eventually. I think this ends up undermining what could have been, if cliched, at least a powerful story for her character. Some scenes are great and fascinating and the movie occasionally does get the excitement across.
