A sweeping epic of a comic-based film. Earning a well-deserved seven Oscar nominations and winning three it proves itself as a great film. The use of colors in the film help add to its striking look as does the set decoration which won an Oscar.
The costumes are great and fit the characters, notably Tracy's famous yellow raincoat and hat. Also making the film stand out is an amazing makeup job since many of Tracy's comic strip baddies show up in the film all looking exactly like their namesakes.
From Flattop to No Face they all look like real gangsters from the funnies. A great cast helps the film including Warren Beatty in the title role and Al Pacino as Big Boy Caprice, a supporting role for which he was nominated.
Helping the two main players are such actors as Madonna, Charlie Korsmo (of Hook for those who may know him better from that), Dick Van Dyke, Dustin Hoffman, James Caan, Catherine O'Hara, Kathy Bates, Charles Durning, Charles Fleischer (the voice of Roger Rabbit), and Glenne Headly as Tess Trueheart.
The film is well put together (as seen from its nominations for cinematography, costumes, makeup, art direction - set decoration, and sound. The photography flows nicely through good editing and makes the film feel real, yet comic like in a beautiful combination.
