Review of Dick Tracy (1990) by Phil C — 21 Mar 2010
Forget Spiderman, and even the Burton version of Batman; Dicky Tracy is the comic book adaptation which really captured the form. Yes, the movie suffers from Beatty's age and Madonna's star power. But the production design is stunning and the film remains true to that concept as it races from spectacular set piece to spectacular set piece.
Ultimately it would take The Dark Knight to really fuse the mediums together by, essentially, ditching all the comic book stuff altogether and reconfiguring the story as a thriller. Therefore Dick Tracy still remains as the best comic book looking movie (and it's fascinating how often it's referenced these days in other, less sniffily regarded, productions).
