Review of Devil (2010) by Just Jenna O — 11 Apr 2012
Despite the involvement of M. Night Shyamalan as writer, "Devil" is a good, tense horror flick... right up to the predictable, preachy ending. There's no particularly unexpected twist here and it would be easy enough to condemn the formulaic nature and ham-fisted moralizing that Shyamalan just can't resist these days, but before we get to the trite "God be praised!" climax, there's an hour's worth of solid suspense in this short (75 minute) flick.
Nothing original here. The gore's mild, the acting is passable, and the whole thing is an extended Twilight Zone episode. Still, Shyamalan didn't *direct* Devil, and that helps it. OK entertainment; add half a star if you really like elevators as horror settings.
