Review of Detachment (2011) by Sam S — 24 Mar 2013
I related to the main character, Henry, played by the inimitable Adrien Brody, one of my favorite actors. It's hard, therefore, for me to be completely objective. I related to his fear of attachment, along with his deep desire for connection.
I related to his love for young people & his desire to help them in the short spans in which he could connect with their hearts. I related to his sorrow at not being able to put a dent in the desperate need out there.
I related to the frustration with politics, "the system", apathy, bureaucracy, & wanting to be a fractionally significant heart beating in the midst of it. His feeling of invisibility...
Yet deciding to overcome the past injustices, the present injustices, and make slight changes for the better. I highly recommend this movie. However, it will leave people sad, lonely & hopeless unless they realize that in the midst of the human despair & brokenness, our hope must be in God.
..and this film only focuses on the brokenness & one man's personal attempt to be a positive light in his small corner of the world. God can shine much more brightly than one man on his own steam.
