Review of Dersu Uzala (1961) by Jonathan S — 19 Apr 2009
A quiet and poetic character study. Kurosawa directs this Russian film with beauty, compassion, and sensitivity. A beautiful story full of wisdom and a heart that sings to the soul. "Dersu Uzala" is an impressive, emotional journey through the harsh elements and warm friendships.
Kurosawa proves himself a master filmmaker once again with refreshing maturity that he would bring to all of his projects following this one. "Dersu Uzala" was the beginning of a new stage in Kurosawa's filmmaking.
An excellent precursor to films like "Ran," "Rhapsody in August," and "Madadayo.".
