Review of Death Wish (2018) by Paul S — 03 Mar 2018
Oh look, another instance where the "professional critics" and audiences are polar opposites. Last Jedi: Critics fapped over it, audience gives it 48% approval. 12 Strong, critics were meh about it, audiences liked it.
This movie is polar opposite; 15% pro for the critics 84% for the audience? It's evident the critics no longer represent us and can't be trusted for their opinions anymore. Death Wish was one of the most entertaining films I've seen in quite some time.
As a fan of the original with Charles Bronson, I was skeptical it would have the same flavor in today's culture, and also skeptical it would be different enough to make it stand out from its predecessor.
I was pleasantly surprised on both concerns. The 2018 film still pays enough homage to the original, yet puts a modern spin with a fresh twist on the story. It's like a brand new sports car; familiar where you want it to be, and novel enough to feel unique.
This type of role seems ideal for Willis. We all know him as John McClane from Die Hard, but he plays a convincingly meek Paul Kersey who is thrust into a world of violence unwittingly. Willis appears to be at the same rough age as Bronson, too old to be kicking ass with brawn and vitality alone, but not too old to be feeble and unable to take care of business.
This movie took care of business and I can't wait to own this one on BluRay. Suck it, critics!
