Review of Death Wish (1974) by Brentwood B — 22 Dec 2009
For '74 this flick wuz radical!!! Perfect casting w/ Charles Bronson--here not as a tough guy--but as a white collar architec fed up w/ NYC's non-justice and turns into a vigilante.
Remember, only a couple films around the time had this kind of modern & violent social daring/justice--"Dirty Harry" ('71), "Easy Rider" ('69), the underground megahit "Billy Jack", and of course "French Connection".
But this film wasn't made because of some 'let's try this and c if audiences will like it' approach, but at that time crime rates, esp. in NYC were rampant. This film is a social mirror of that area & time...
I had heard that this wuz based on a true story about a similiar situation & once the NY cops caught him, sent him on a 1 way train to Chicago just like in the movie! I don't know if that's true or not, but...
Anyway, a riveting movie!
