Review of Death Note (2017) by Robby K — 07 Sep 2017
"Death Note" is adapted from a beloved manga and anime, and though Willem Dafoe's performance captures Ryuk's essence, the rest of the film fails to embody everything that the source material was trying to say.
Nat Wolff's performance, though not at all bad, isn't the character that fans know and love. So much of what made the manga and anime great is either changed or removed entirely. Adam Wingard is a talented director, but getting rid of captivating character development in favor of bland, do-nothing mantages was a very poor judgement call.
People new to the world of Death Note will find many redeeming qualities, but maybe we can just stop with the "Americanization" of beloved foreign properties. Or at least try a little harder to stay somewhat faithful to the originals.
