Review of Death Note (2017) by Raven K — 25 Sep 2017
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME ON THIS MOVIE IF YOU HAVE SEEN THE ORIGINAL ANIME DEATH NOTE.
Or even if you haven't, this movie is not a very good stand alone feature.
There are very few redeemable qualities in this movie, Willem Dafoe as Ryuk is kind of fun and there is a scene where we get to see a sort of "classic Light" plan unfold.
Aside from these things, the movie is poorly Americanized, keeping some elements from Japan that could have easily translated more thoroughly to an all American version.
From the very beginning to the end there are extreme character changes and almost more disappointingly, characters and ideas that are 100% left out (all of Detective Yagami's crew, Shinigami eyes, light and ryuk's dynamic, light as a character, and so so so much more).
A better title would be "Decease Letter, extremely loosely based on 5 minutes of Death Note.
