Review of Death Note (2017) by Tom Z — 10 Sep 2017
A real missed opportunity. For every good or half way decent thing this movie does there are about 5 things it does wrong or just flat out doesn't do. LaKeith Stanfield as L and Willem Dafoes as Ryun where great casting but Nat Wolff as Light felt more like a Death Note comedy rather then a faithful interpretation.
The death note anime delves into the right and wrong of the death note as an idea. Is killing someone who does bad deeds justified? While this is explored in this movie not to the same level. The bulk of the movie has to deal with Mia and Light falling in love over killing people.
While Mia's obsetion with power interesting and should be explored it really shouldn't have taken a front seat to the more interesting aspect of the source material. If this movie did anything it really showed how great the anime truly is.
