Review of Death in Venice (1971) by Will V — 03 Apr 2009
In my opinion, this is one of the great film masterpieces ever conceived. To me, Visconti gave every frame of this movie the consideration of a Renaissance painting. Perfect actors (Bogarde and Bjorn), perfect score (Gustav Maher).
Very few changes from the original novella, and a distillation of what I believe Thomas Mann was trying to convey. You will probably either love or hate this film. If you feel it "drags on, and is too pretentious" as some viewers have stated, there isn't much I can say.
It isn't for everyone.
