Review of Death in Venice (1971) by Colleen C — 01 Jun 2009
I think ive always felt that visconti, while he has had some excellent films, is the lesser of the great italian masters. but he has always been a visual sensation, and this film is certainly no exception.
it seems that every frame could be used as a renaissance painting. beautiful composition. and to be honest, the film gave me the same feeling that I got when I read the book. however, this is not a movie.
in drawing the narrative out as he has done, the film, while evoking the same emotions as the book, has changed the emotions all together when stretching them out in such a way. it is entirely too long.
if reading the book had been this slow and tedious I never would have read it.
