Review of Dear White People (2014) by Steve D — 18 Jun 2014
This movie is not revolutionary. It isn't something new, doesn't try to reinvent the genre and isn't going to make you think "I've never seen anything like this before." Instead, it updates and expands on a genre used by a number of previous films by acclaimed directors like Singleton, Lee, Butler, etc and does a great job of staying in its lane. Rather than answering all the questions of Race, DWP does a great job of steering the conversation towards asking the correct questions and promotes an initiation of critical self-analysis as individuals and as a society.
It does an excellent job of taking a very specific, yet broad subject (being Black on a predominately White college campus) and using it as a microcosm for the struggles that we all face while struggling to figure out what's most important: self identification or external validation.
Overall, an excellent product.
