Review of Dear Frankie (2004) by Gretta H — 02 Jul 2009
Hearing-impaired Frankie writes letters to his sailor dad, whom he's never met. One day he gets word that his dad's ship is coming to port in Glasgow and young Frankie can't wait to meet him.
Problem is, this dad doesn't actually exist. It's his mum, Lizzie, who's been writing to him all along to protect him from the truth about his real father, who turns out to be not so nice after all, and which is why they're on the run from him in the first place.
To keep up the lie, Lizzie hires a complete stranger to pretend to be Frankie's dad for a day, before the ship sails off again. Sounds like quite a predictable plot, only it isn't, and I loved the direction the story took and how it ended.
A precious little gem of a movie with fine acting and a whole lotta heart.
