Review of Dear Evan Hansen (2021) by Tonrot — 26 Sep 2021
Masterful telling of tale of teen whose anxiety and kindness suck him into hurting others. Beware of critics who appear unfamiliar with the ability of passive teens to be drawn into doing things they would never set out to do, a teen’s ability act in the moment oblivious of what will happen next, and the comfort level among many to discuss treatment with peers.
Folks who don’t like the film also appear to have missed many of the details: they criticize the fact that Jared is mean to Evan when he is supposed to be his friend— seemingly clueless that he most definitely is not a friend, as Jared makes clear.
Ben Platt is 27. Perhaps I am too old to care because I don’t. He good in the role.
