Review of Dead Calm (1989) by Andrew D — 10 Jun 2010
A decent thriller with dark humor and interesting character dynamics. The plot is simple - killer kidnaps woman on boat, husband tries to save her. Starts out with effective use of sound to create an ominous mood.
You can see where Funny Games borrows from. The killer's motives are unclear, and the plot points are predictable and implausible, with characters making bad decisions. The score is also dated.
