Review of Dead Calm (1989) by George E — 04 Jan 2010
This film started painfully slow. Though, the parts with the Kidman at the hospital and her son's death were fine for me. But right after those scenes the film should've shown Zane's character appearing, instead having talking scenes in between. Even after he was rescued, what the characters did is talked and talked. Sam Neill then leaves the boat (leaving his wife with a stranger), and that was again, too slow and boring. So, the pace was bad in the film.
The music was terrible. It was beyond awful. It was so bad that it was hilarious. Why use synthesizer/opera music for a film like this?
The acting was great. Even though Billy Zane was unintentionally funny. I liked the film a bit in the second half, cos there was a lot of suspense here and there. But if it had a better pace and most importantly DECENT MUSIC, I would've liked it. Also, another thing I didn't like about this film is that she had sex with Zane. That was totally unnecessary. If she wanted to kill him, then she could've easily kissed and then get something from his back, and BANG. She went too far.
All in all, it's good for an Australian movie. It starts quite slow, but then gets better halfway.
