Review of Days of Glory (2006) by Nadeem M — 29 Jan 2008
Great French film dealing with more than just battles and victory. It depicts how Algerian and Moroccan soldiers in WWII, fighting alongside the French against the Nazis, were treated as second-class citizens and not given the same respect and privileges as their French comrades.
It is shocking that even today, their heroism, bravery and sacrifices are not fully acknowledged by the French government, who continue to deny them their pensions, even though they were collectively fighting for their motherland.
The effectiveness of the film is apparent in the way the issues get under your skin and it is hard not to feel angry by the end of it. That and a sense of disbelief.
