Review of Days of Glory (2006) by Brian Z — 24 Feb 2008
In the opening scene, poor Algerian men are flocking to fight with seemingly genuine patriotism for their "motherland", France. The few scenes that dig with any depth into this fascinating paradox and its implications for French colonialism are excellent.
I wish this film would have kept its focus on those themes, because otherwise this is a rather mediocre war movie with tedious battle scenes and an incredibly shoddy romantic sub-plot.
