Review of Day Watch (2006) by Brandon S — 27 Jul 2008
The sequel to Night Watch seemed to have more money behind it. The writing was tighter, the effects cleaner. Overall, it felt more mainstream, which might be why it lost some appeal for me. The original film had uniqueness to it, despite its failings in trying to adapt a large canon to a screenplay.
This felt Hollywood, and almost unconnected to its precursor, despite that without watching Night Watch this film would lose any of its already lacking depth of character and power. Without watching Night Watch, the characters are flat and there is no real urgency or connection to them.
The necessity of viewing Night Watch kinda of detracts from the film, though as a sequel, is expected. Also, some of the nuances of Day Watch's plot seemed to contradict occurrences in Night Watch, but maybe it was too muddled for me to pick up on them originally.
All in all, it was okay.
