Review of Day Watch (2006) by Craig E — 16 Feb 2009
It is undeniable that Timour Bekmambetov's sensibility for jaw-dropping, eye-popping visuals makes him one of the most exhilarating filmmakers around. And Day Watch is no exception. From a visual and action/suspense perspective, Day Watch is a certified success.
However, the convoluted script makes this film a hard watch. There are so many side stories and so much branching off from the central narrative that it is difficult to keep up with at times with many of the offshoot plots being overwrought and unnecessary at best. And while there are a great many unique mythological creations introduced throughout the film -- rivaling even the best of fantasy movies in originality -- some of it comes off as if the creative team was trying to throw in everything into this film including the kitchen sink. Furthermore, the conclusion of the film comes off as a little too easy of a fix and may not sit comfortably with those expecting something of the "next step" type development such as that which linked Night Watch to Day Watch.
With that being said, visually this film is absolutely stunning to watch. The cinematography is typical of a Bekmambetov film; the seamless blending of light with dark and high speed with slow motion all make for a wonderful visual palette all around. The nearly endless stream of both hidden and in-your-face visual FX are all top notch with not a single weak moment from the beginning to the end. The action sequences are fresh and exhilarating; it is no wonder Hollywood was so quick to latch onto and nurture Bekmambetov as he is without a doubt in line to be one of the premiere action/adventure directors for years to come.
All in all, it is safe to say that if you enjoyed Night Watch you'll enjoy Day Watch. However, be forewarned that even with all of the action, suspense and mind-blowing visuals, it will still feel like a long film.
