Review of Day Watch (2006) by Colin H — 01 Mar 2009
A nonsensical mess. Nightwatch (the first in a trilogy of Russian fiction books) was an interesting film... manic but somewhat understandable. Daywatch, by the same director, suffers clearly from taking too much from the source material, often completely unnecessary elements mixed with an insane plot which seems to lose its way.
At first, the most crucial artifact that hinges the plot, is a piece of chalk, which was legendarily fought over (BIG opening battle in ancient times) and can make any wish written with it come true. Compelling. What ultimately happens, is the chalk is completely pointless and does nothing of value, and instead a harmless yo-yo (?) which had no explanation at all, suddenly has the destructive capacity of Skynet.
I mean..... wtf?
So go see Nightwatch, but you aren't missing anything with ignoring Daywatch... asides from the SFX which I would suggest you just watch Wanted instead.
