Review of Day of the Woman (1978) by Sebastian T — 03 Mar 2010
Can an exploitation film have too much rape? Yes. Yes it can. I Spit on Your Grave is an overrated grindhouse classic that exploits the hell out of a 40-minute rape scene, apparently to justify 20 minutes of revenge that is half-hearted in comparison.
Does it do what it sets out to? I'm not quite sure. If it meant to be one of the most graphic representations of rape ever put to film, it succeeds with shock to spare. If it set out to be somehow empowering to women or victims, it fails miserably even among its class (a few college girls who fancy themselves novelists will probably relate to the heroine, but any with half a brain will be able to see right through it).
If it set out be a very well-made revenge spree exploitation film (the most likely scenario,) it fails. The revenge isn't entertaining enough to justify the prolonged, graphic sexual assault or satisfying enough following it.
