Review of Day of the Woman (1978) by Andy L — 01 Jul 2010
So, banned for years, but is the movie actually worth all the fuss. In a word, no. In my opinion, controversial and somtimes banned movies fall into 3 main categories. Firstly, those that are uncomfortable to watch yet are well made, often stylistic and with something important to say. An example of which would be 'A Clockwork Orange' or 'Requiem for a dream'. Secondly, movies which are fantastical, containing ghouls or monsters. Again well made, and meant to be scary in a old style horror movie sense- e.g. Evil Dead, The Exorcist. Lastly are those that are poorly made, plain exploitative and not either entertaining or thought provoking in any way. 'I Spit On Your Grave' is a fine example of those movies.
The first half is degrading and unpleasant (although the version I saw was clearly badly censored), with the latter scenes being both ridiculous and pointless. I wasted my time on it. Hopefully you won't do the same.
