Review of Day Night Day Night (2006) by Eiieen R — 01 Aug 2008
It is certainly an interesting story I havenâ??t even seen approached on the screen before, with the possible exception of United 93. However, these are definitely two very different films. This film is all about the details and the little mundane moments of everyday life.
It is simply the future action of the protagonist that makes these insignificant details meaningful; the miniature is made monumental. She is basically an enigma, although one feels they know her perhaps better than most friends or acquaintances in a way.
Itâ??s as if one is seeing someone at their most unguarded moments. Itâ??s certainly an interesting last meal (cold egg rolls) and it is shot in an illuminating manner. However, this turns out to simply be a prelude to the other snacks she picks up along the way.
The disposal of the toiletries, the memorization of an alternate identity, the mini-fashion runway, the cleaning, etc. are all good touches that really help make the film. Every detail contributes to the whole in a stunning and mesmerizing way.
It wasnâ??t until she arrived on the streets of Manhattan that the monstrosity of her potential future actions hit me though. The manner in which these scenes, particularly, but the rest of the film as well, were filmed, recorded, and performed all served to elevate the viewerâ??s interest and ratchet up the tension.
The ending is certainly a bit of a denouement, but this does not detract from the film. It was simply unexpected for me and made her character all that much more incomprehensible in many respects. I definitely may be underrating it with a 3.
