Review of Day Night Day Night (2006) by Michele S — 15 Jul 2010
Director Julia Loktev DOES need to give up her day job. This woman clearly has a fascination with watching a girl eat, brush her teeth, bathe, clip toe nails, eat again, change clothes, change clothes again, eat again...you get the point. Anyway, Julia is great at making a boring movie even more boring. Really, this is a 1hr & 34 minute movie that could have easily been summed up in 10 minutes.
A girl prepares to be a suicide bomber. Uuuum, yeah, that is pretty much the plot. There is absolutely no story here. There is no mention of where she's from, her religion, or why she is volunteering for this mission. We get to watch her prepare for it and then make a few attempts to blow herself up, along with whoever is around her, in Times Square.
Let me tell ya...I think I can go to sleep and dream of every detail of this girls face. Not because I want to, but because her face was singed into my brain thanks to dear 'ol Julia. Oh, BTW, Julia...did you notice that the New Yorkers were looking into the camera!!! It doesn't really make for a good suicide bomber movie when the "unsuspecting" people are looking into the camera. Damn, did I start going on another tangent about the director...well, she deserves my bashing.
The finale...we get to look at the girls face, yet again, for about five minutes (an eternity in movie time) and then a few street shots (from her view) and then rolling of the credits. Aaaaahhhhhh! At this point, I'm ready to see her die but dear ol' Julia deprived me of that too! Yes, Julia was not only the director but the writer as well.
There may have been three moments of suspense but it didn't make up for all the excessive boredom I had to sit through just to get to those moments.
So, in a nutshell...Day Night Day Night not only has a stupid title but is also an extremely boring movie with absolutely no substance. The end!
