Excellent homage to superhero movies. Originally Raimi wanted to make The Shadow but since that was being done as a big budget spectacle film and he didn't have the chops yet to take it on according to producers he settled for writing and directing his own original take on superhero film with this tale of a scientist who is burned and scarred in an explosion and must seek revenge using masks made of the fake skin that he was working on.

Brilliant!
