Wow. I think John Carpenter just broke my mind open with the sheer power of awesome.
It's as if someone looked at Silent Running, went well screw the hippies, added in Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, tried to make a beach ball scary, and went stuff that lets make Dark Star instead.
I honestly thought people were exaggerating when they said the alien was a beach ball with feet. My apologies to those I doubted.
Talking bombs, including one that gets converted into a Solipsist, surfer music, frozen dead guy and a dude surfing to his death into a planetary atmosphere.
What's not to love?
