Review of Dark Star (1974) by Jim B — 19 Mar 2014
If it's 1974 and I'm making a low-budget science fiction film, what do I do? Take one part "2001: A Space Odyssey", one part Philip K. Dick, one part Ray Bradbury, and throw in an alien that looks like a giant beach ball (with clawed feet).
This seems to be what Dan O'Bannon (later scripter of Alien) and John Carpenter (Halloween etc.) seem to have done. The result is kind of heady but very slow, probably stoned, and meandering all over the place.
Some guys are on a space mission to blow up unstable planets; they talk philosophy to a bomb. The special effects aren't too bad for the time (and for the money, I'll assume) and it does bring you back to an era that no longer exists.
Might be worth a look for 70 minutes or so of your time.
