Review of Dark Country (2009) by Chris H — 19 Mar 2011
Jane's second directorial effort (why I watched it) has a weird comic book crossed with noir style to it, which jars at first, but you get used to it. The music is crappy, but it's not so bad that it annoys or puts you off the film.
Reminded me of Lynch's Lost Highway a bit. German is so hot in this. Also never noticed how much she looks like Amy Smart before. Jane does well as both director and star here. There's a kind of neat time travel/time loop twist at the end (unfortunately I knew the bloody guy was Jane straight away, just from the look of him, but I guessed it was some version of his subconscious, not literally a future version of him), which makes the film a tad more interesting overall, once you've finished it.
Jane and writer Murphy both try really hard here, but somehow it just doesn't come together into anything that is more than just 'good' at best (thus 3 stars). Commendable for its effort and unique style.
