Review of Dangerous Liaisons (1988) by Stephen M — 29 Mar 2008
The book upon which the play LES LIAISONS DANGEUREUSES is based; that play, upon which this film is based are both ingenius. Frears' direction of this movie is brilliant. Glenn Close is off the map amazing and Michelle Pfeiffer is out of sight fantastic. The supporting cast features the great Swoosie Kurtz and Mildred Natwick; does it get better? The costumes are breathtaking and the music is hypnotic.
I think it is clear how much I admire this film (even though the ending is neither the ending from the play nor the book - it is still compelling).
I deducting one star for the completely unbelievable and midwestern performance of John Malkovich. Not even the wooden Keanu Reeves comes close to being so miscast in this film.
Tch.
