Review of Dangerous Liaisons (1988) by Tony P — 11 Feb 2018
Period drama directed by Stephen Frears based on a French novel and acclaimed play Les Liasons Dangereuses.
It basically is a story of sexual intrigue, cynicism and calculated games amongst French aristocrats.
The film was notable for me for some interesting casting.
Glenn Close revels as the rather vindictive Marquise de Merteuil. Her performance reminded me of her role in Fatal Attraction.
John Malkovich plays a sexual eighteenth century playboy Vicomte de Valmont whose sexual promiscuity must have provided some light hearted relief in a time of scary AIDS adverts in the late 1980s.
Keanu Reeves looks about 16 as Chevalier Danceny. I associate him more with films such as Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey!
It is a film that can prove quite confusing for the first twenty minutes or so with all these Marquise' and Madame characters. However it does get better.
The costume and lavish locations are a highlight as well as the aforementioned casting.
